Donors make an impact on the success of our students. Here are their stories.
Providing Opportunities for Montgomery College Students
In April 2007, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi extended remarks about her dear friends Sam and Lucy Keker on the occasion of their 90th birthdays: "What I have always admired about Sam and Lucy is their indomitable spirit and youthfulness. They inspire us all with their never-flagging interest in life, especially in young people."
Supporting the Desire for Education
As a young man, Sol was driven by a desire to get an education. "I thought I was going to college, but we didn't have the money. I asked my father to sign me up for the Navy because of the promise of some kind of schooling," he says. And the promise was fulfilled: Sol eventually attended Montgomery College, Prince George's Community College, and the University of Maryland.
Leaving a Legacy: Florence Helen Ashby
Throughout her career, Ashby looked for ways to do more for her students. In 1984, she established the Florence Muriel Ashby Endowed Scholarship, awarded to the best math student, in memory of her mother. A few years ago, she and her late husband, Laird Anderson, bequeathed a gift for the Florence Ashby and Laird Anderson Endowed Scholarship.
